A Journey of Gratitude and Hope By: Kurt Barnes

As we gather our thoughts and hearts for Veterans Day, I’m moved to pause and express deep gratitude for the courageous men and women who’ve served in our armed forces. To my friends and community members who’ve sacrificed so much, a heartfelt thank you. Your service echoes the profound words from John 15:13: “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”

This incredible act of love and sacrifice underpins the freedom we experience daily. You’ve not only protected our rights and liberties but have truly embodied a life of selfless service. For this, we are deeply grateful, recognizing the extraordinary cost of what you have given.

But as we express our gratitude, I’m also aware of the journey you’re on. Coming home can be its own kind of battle. The transition doesn’t come with an easy map, and it’s a journey filled with its own set of challenges and discoveries. Here are a few truths and encouragements to accompany you on this path:

Walking the Path of Healing

Presence Over Perfection:

Military culture obsesses over perfection, but the way of Jesus is different—it’s about presence. He promises in Matthew 28:20, “And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” You don’t need to be perfect; you only need to be present. Lean into God’s presence and find your strength there.

Renewal and Restoration:

Romans 12:2 reminds us, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Healing isn’t a one-off event; it’s an ongoing journey. Trust in that process, and allow the Spirit to renew and revive your innermost being.

The Gift of Community:

As it says in Hebrews 10:24-25, “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together…” Community isn’t just a support system—it’s essential. Surround yourself with people who remind you of God’s promises, who walk with you through struggles, and who celebrate victories with you.

A Hope and a Future:

Jeremiah 29:11 speaks into our future saying, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” There’s a divine story being written into the fabric of your life, full of hope and purpose. Trust in it as you navigate new chapters.

Creating Spaces for Healing

As a faith community, let’s intentionally create environments where healing can take root—spaces where vulnerability is met with understanding and grace. Whether you’re a veteran or someone supporting one, let’s open our arms wide to embrace each story, each journey.

To all veterans, please know your narrative is vital. You are not alone, and your bravery extends beyond the battlefield into the courage to be present, to heal, and to hope. May you find peace in the unwavering presence of God and the embrace of a loving community.

With heartfelt gratitude and encouragement,

Pastor Kurt Barnes
