Growing up as a pastor’s kid and stepping into leadership roles at a young age, I quickly fell into the rhythm of performative Christianity. My life was filled with prayer in meetings and on stage, where maintaining an image of spiritual vitality felt essential. But despite these visible moments, my private prayer life was lacking the depth needed to sustain, empower, and guide my walk with God. In striving to uphold these expectations, I relied on my strength and gifting rather than drawing from the abundant fruit of an abiding relationship with Christ.
Influential voices like Rich Villodas, John Mark Comer, and Dallas Willard have encouraged and guided my journey. Rich Villodas highlights the “interior journey,” teaching me that the health of my public ministry is directly linked to the richness of my private devotion. John Mark Comer emphasizes the importance of slowing down and creating space for God, showing me how to step away from the chaos to find genuine peace and grounding in His presence. Dallas Willard’s teachings on spiritual disciplines, especially hidden prayer, have underscored their essential role in experiencing the fullness of life in Christ. These insights collectively reinforced the idea that without a deep, hidden life in God, the spirituality I outwardly project risks lacking true substance and authenticity.
Scriptural Foundation:
Matthew 6:6 (NIV) serves as a powerful reminder: “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” This verse underscores the vital necessity of private communion with God, away from public expectations.
Reflection:
- Looking back, I’ve realized the critical importance of private, hidden prayer as emphasized by Jesus. It’s in these quiet moments, away from the eyes of the public, where I found the space to deeply engage with God, revealing my heart’s true struggles and desires.
- Hidden prayer has become a sanctuary for my soul, fostering authenticity in my relationship with God. These intimate encounters recalibrate my spirit, grounding me in God’s unwavering presence rather than the shifting opinions of others. Paul echoes this sentiment in 1 Corinthians 4:3-4 (NIV): “I care very little if I am judged by you or by any human court; indeed, I do not even judge myself. My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me.”
Uncovering the value of hidden prayer has been transformative for me. It’s in these times of solitude and connection with God that I’m reminded of His deep love and acceptance beyond surface-level performance. By creating these sacred moments with the Father, I find rest and rejuvenation, ensuring that my ministry reflects the authentic depth of an abiding relationship with Christ. Let us each seek out these quiet spaces, away from the public eye, to honestly share our hearts with God, allowing His presence and grace to richly fill our lives.
Questions for Reflection:
- In what areas of your life do you currently rely on your own strength, and how might turning to hidden prayer invite God’s guidance and empowerment in those areas?
Reflect on tasks or challenges where you feel the most burdened and consider how quiet time with God could bring clarity and strength beyond your own abilities. - How often do you find yourself adjusting your actions or words based on the perceived expectations of others, and how might hidden prayer help realign your priorities with God’s perspective?
Consider how time spent in private prayer could refocus your heart and actions towards what truly matters in your walk with God. - What personal and communal practices could you establish to ensure that your spiritual life is genuinely nourished by a relationship with Christ, rather than simply performing for external approval?
Think about spiritual disciplines or community supports that could help deepen your connection with God, ensuring that your faith is grounded in genuine devotion.
Here is an “Abiding Practice” that I created to help you get started. Over the past year, I have written hundreds more of these practices for myself and my friends. If you are interested, you can find a published collection at the link below.
Abiding Practice: Discovering the Power of Hidden Prayer
Scripture Reading:
Matthew 6:6 (NIV) “But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.”
Preparation:
Find a quiet, private space where you can be alone with your thoughts. It could be a quiet room, a peaceful spot in your backyard, or any place where you feel comfortable and free of distractions. Sit or kneel comfortably, close your eyes, and take several deep breaths. As you breathe in, imagine being filled with God’s peace and presence. As you exhale, release any worries or tensions.
Reflection Steps:
- Reflect on the Scripture:
Slowly read Matthew 6:6 aloud to yourself. Imagine Jesus inviting you into a private, intimate conversation. Let His words remind you that God’s attention is on your heart, not your outward actions. - Visualize a Personal Meeting with God:
Picture yourself entering a cozy, quiet room where God is waiting to meet with you. Visualize sitting with Him, open and honest, sharing the joys and struggles of your heart. Feel His presence bringing you peace and reassurance. - Prayer for Authentic Connection:
Offer a prayer seeking a deeper, authentic connection with God away from public eyes.
Prayer: “Father, draw me into Your presence, beyond the expectations of others. Help me to find joy and strength in our hidden moments together. Let Your love fill my heart so that my faith reflects true connection rather than performance.” - Contemplate Personal and Spiritual Growth:
Contemplate ways in which hidden prayer could transform your personal and spiritual life. Think about the areas where you have felt the pressure to perform and how these private times with God might offer freedom and authentic growth. - Embrace Gratitude:
Take a moment to express gratitude for this intimate access to God and the opportunity to be real with Him. Thank Him for the ways He promises to meet you in these private moments and for the strength and wisdom you gain from them. - Commit to Integrating Hidden Prayer:
Consider how you can incorporate regular hidden prayer into your routine. Maybe it’s setting aside a few minutes each morning or creating a specific corner in your home dedicated to prayer. Commit to this practice as a way to nurture your relationship with God.
Close in Worship:
End your time with a simple song of worship or a moment of silent praise. Allow this to be an offering of your desire to live authentically connected to God.
Reflection Questions:
- How does hidden prayer change your understanding of yourself and your relationship with God?
- What specific practices could help deepen your private devotional life?
- In what ways can you let God’s presence in these private moments guide your public interactions and decisions?
