Advent Week 3
By: Kurt Barnes
In our fast-paced world, many people chase after happiness, thinking it’s the same as having true joy. But there’s a big difference—one that could completely change how you live. While happiness is a temporary feeling that depends on our current circumstances, Christian joy is a lasting, life-altering gift that comes from knowing Jesus.
The Joy vs. Happiness Debate
Here’s something important to understand: happiness and joy are not the same. Happiness fluctuates with the circumstances around us—our jobs, relationships, and possessions. When life is good, we feel happy. But when challenges come, that happiness can fade.
Joy, however, is something deeper. It’s not dependent on what’s happening around us because it’s anchored in one unchanging source: Jesus Christ. Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV) tells us that joy is a fruit of the Spirit, along with love, peace, and patience. This joy isn’t something we create on our own; it’s a gift that emerges when we stay connected to Jesus.
Staying Connected to the Source of Joy
Our true source of joy comes when we abide in Jesus. In John 15:4-11 (NIV), Jesus says, “Remain in me, as I also remain in you…I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” When we stay in close relationship with Jesus, He fills us with a joy that is complete and satisfying.
Author Aubrey Malphurs sums it up nicely, “Joy is an attitude of the heart…because our focus is fixed on the certainty of who God is rather than on our circumstances.” This means that real joy comes when we focus on Jesus, not on life’s ups and downs.
Biblical Assurance of Unshakeable Joy
The Bible is full of verses that reassure us of the enduring nature of God’s joy. Check out what James 1:2-3 (NIV) says: “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.” Even our trials can lead to joy, because they help us grow.
Nehemiah 8:10 (NIV) beautifully reminds us, “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” God’s joy gives us the strength to tackle life’s challenges with hope and confidence.
Living Out Christian Joy Every Day
Christian joy is powerful because it transcends our circumstances. It allows us to live with hope, no matter what. Charles Spurgeon once said, “The Christian’s joy wants no outward stimulus; it finds its all in itself.” This joy comes from within, and it’s rooted in our relationship with Jesus.
When we immerse ourselves in Jesus, His joy overflows into every area of our lives, influencing us and the people around us. It’s a joy that becomes contagious!
Wrap-Up
Lasting joy isn’t found in temporary experiences or possessions, but in a faithful relationship with Jesus Christ. He offers us a kind of joy that remains constant through life’s highs and lows. Let’s embrace this incredible gift, allowing it to transform us from the inside out, and let’s share this joy with a world in desperate need of hope. So remember, to experience true joy, stay connected with Jesus—the ultimate source of joy in our lives.
